Daily Themes
We continue in our series of themes
based on Doctrine and Covenants 161.
This year (2003) we celebrate the 75th anniversary of
youth camping in the Community of Christ. It all began in the hills
above the Mississippi River at Camp Nauvoo in June 1928. Camping
provides the most concentrated efforts of spiritual formation and
Christian education offered by the Community of Christ.
Looking back, we see how generations have embraced the call and
decided to live the message—the gospel message—through seeking God,
following Jesus Christ, and responding to the Holy Spirit.
The following scriptures below are suggested for daily themes.
Other scriptures may be selected for the final version of the
resource.

Day 1: Believe the Message
Now I would remind you,
brothers and sisters, of the
good news that I proclaimed to
you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through
which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message
that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain.
For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had
received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the
scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the
third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared
to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five
hundred brothers and sisters
at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last
of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
—1 Corinthians 15:1-8 NRSV

Day 2: Embrace the Call
Know, O my people, the time for hesitation
is past. The earth, my creation, groans for the liberating
truths of my gospel which have been given for the salvation of
the world. Test my words. Trust in my promises for they have been
given for your assurance and will bear you up in times of doubt.
Be not overly concerned with method as you go forth to witness in
my name. There are many techniques for proclaiming my word which
may be used as needs and circumstances dictate. The call is for
workers in the cause of Zion; therefore, neither tarry, nor doubt
that I am. I know your perplexities and I am aware of your
uncertainties, but if you will call upon my name my Spirit will go
before you into whatsoever place you are sent and I will
continue to bless you as you have need.
—Doctrine and Covenants 155: 7-8

Day 3: Respond with Generosity
As for those who in
the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to
set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God
who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are
to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to
share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good
foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life
that really is life.
—1 Timothy 6:17-19

Day 4: Create the
Peace
Then his father
Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on
his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior
for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke
through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would
be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has
remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our
ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the
hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness
and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be
called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the
Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his
people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of
our God, the dawn from on high will break upon
us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the
shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
—Luke
1:67-79

Day 5: Live the Witness
…the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law
against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by
the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.
—Galatians
