The Peace and Justice Banner
This banner was commissioned by Peace and Justice
Ministries to represent the work of the team. It was designed by Anne
Romig with assistance from Judith Karol.
The words "peace" and "justice" around the outside are in Hebrew, English,
Spanish, French, and Chinese. In the center, an olive tree represents the
biblical tree of life with its promise of healing for the nations
(Revelation 22:2). Above the olive tree is a rainbow with its promise of
Zion and the kingdom of God on Earth. Behind the olive tree is a grove of
trees recalling Joseph Smith Jr.'s first vision as a teenager. On one side
of the olive tree is wheat and on the other is rice--these staple cereals of
the West and the East remind viewers that everyone should be fed and no
child should go hungry. At the bottom of the banner, there is a combination of two important passages from Isaiah: beating swords into
plows (Isaiah 2:1-4) and a lion lying down with the lamb with a young
child leading them, which speaks of justice and reconciliation throughout
all of creation (Isaiah 11:4, 6-9).
